Librarian Test Guide - Marissa: Vancouver: Basics & In-text

Manual

Vancouver is a citation style often used in health and biomedical sciences and is used in Precision Medicine. Access the manual online through the National Library of Medicine.

Style Basics

  • Alternative Name: ICMJE Style (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors)

  • There are many similarities between AMA StyleNLM Style, and Vancouver.

  • Do not cite secondary sources. If citing a source that is cited in another work, refer to the original.
  • When citing more than one resource at a time, list each number separated by a comma and a dash for consecutive numbers. Do not include a space between commas or dashes.
    • Example: (1,5,7-9)
There may be variations in Vancouver style. Check with your faculty for details on changes.

Citing with PubMed

PubMed offers ready-made citations in NLM style using the Cite Button.

Imported or ready-made citations are not guaranteed to be correct. Double-check citations before use.

Checking Citations: Things to look for in imported citations and how to edit citations with errors.

In-text Citations

Citations are numbered by first appearance in the text. A number is used in round or square brackets or using superscript and is placed after the period ending the sentence where the citation appears.

Examples:

...as one author has put it, the darkest days were still ahead. (1)

...as one author has put it, the darkest days were still ahead. [1]

...as one author has put it, the darkest days were still ahead.¹

The citation number may also be integrated into the text.

Example: Sholtz¹ has argued that...

If using a quotation, page numbers are needed. Add them within the citation using the format below.

Quotes are not standard practice in graduate level scientific writing.

...as one author has put it "the darkest days were still ahead". (1 p23)

...as one author has put it "the darkest days were still ahead".¹⁽ᵖ²³⁾

Sholtz (1 p16-18) has argued that...
