AMA 11th Edition: Reference List

Basic Principles of the Reference List

Format your reference list in AMA Style:

  • Do list sources in the order they are cited in-text and left align your list.
  • Don't double-space your references

Three Elements of a Reference List Entry

  1. Author: Who is responsible for the work?
  2. Title: What is this work called?
  3. Source: From where can the work be retrieved? When was this work published?

Author

Author Type Format Example
One individual Surname Initials. Pierce KP.
2-6 Individuals Surname Initials, Surname Initials. Chew KL, Lin RTP.
7+ Individuals Surname Initials, Surname Initials, Surname Initials, et al. Tater KC, Cole WE, Pion PD, et al.

 

  • List the last name and the author's initials with no punctuation
  • Include all author names for 1 to 6 authors.
  • For 7+ authors, list the first 3 authors followed by et al.

Title

Journals

  • Use title case for journal articles titles. 
  • Italicize and abbreviate the name of the journal. 

Books

  • Use title case and italicize the name of the book. 
  • Use sentence case for chapter titles. Do not italicize the chapter title.

Websites

  • Sentence case should be used for webpage titles. 
  • If a website has no title, use the name of the organization responsible for the site as the title.
