Papers Mobile Application

  • Access, read, and annotate saved PDFs in your Library

  • While browsing in a web browser app (e.g. Safari, Chrome, Firefox), you can export downloadable PDFs into Papers
    • Click Export > Select Papers
    • If a PDF is not available, Papers will save it as a web page that will need to be edited later.
  • Note: The Papers browser extension is not currently compatible with the Papers mobile application.
  • Note: The SmartCite Add-in is not currently compatible with the Microsoft Word mobile application or Google Docs mobile application on iPad

Differences Between Using the App and Papers in a Web Browser

  • The Papers mobile application has the capability to download articles for offline reading and annotating.
  • Using Papers in a web browser app requires internet access, but is more fully featured when it comes to adding and organizing references

We generally recommend using your Papers account on an iPad in a web browser app (e.g. Safari, Chrome, Firefox) over the Papers mobile application. Below are a pair of screenshots to better illustrate the feature differences between using Papers in the mobile app or a web browser:

Adding Articles to Your Papers Library using a DOI on iPad

Another way to add a reference into Papers is by using a unique identifier like a DOI.
Note: For iPad users, this is currently the most reliable method for adding references to your Papers Library.

  1. Locate the DOI of your reference; select and copy it
  2. In your Papers Library, near the top of your screen, click +Add and select From List of Identifiers
  3. In the pop-up window, paste the DOI of the reference you previously located into the field
    • To insert more than one DOI at a time, type a space between each DOI number
  4. Click Import to finish adding your reference to your Papers Library
