Using EndNote 21: Collecting References

Instructions for setting up libraries, CWYW and sharing libraries using EndNote 21 by Clarivate.

Collecting References from Databases

The most important aspect of using EndNote is to collect reference data to create your library. Directions for importing and exporting files from the most used databases are highlighted here.

Some steps can change depending on your operating system and browser.

PubMed

  1. Open EN 21 desktop program
  2. From the library homepage, click PubMed
  3. Perform a search. Check the box near the title of the article(s) you wish to add
  4. Click Send To link near the top of the page. Click Citation Manager then Create File
  5. Select EndNote from the Choose Destination box
  6. Reference will show in Recently added folder and [Unfiled]
  7. Add reference to a subject group

Web of Science

  1. Open EndNote 21 desktop app
  2. From the library homepage, click Web of Science
  3. Perform a search. Check the box near the title of article(s) you wish to add
  4. Click Export link near the top of the search results. Select Endnote desktop
  5. Choose the record options and content items
  6. If file saves to browser, click on file
  7. Select EndNote desktop from the Choose Destination box
  8. Reference will show in Imported references folder and Recently added folder plus [Unfiled]
  9. Add reference to subject group

EBSCOhost Databases

  1. Open EndNote 21 desktop app
  2. Start at the library homepage, click EBSCOhost databases. Select database(s) you want to use, and click Continue
  3. Perform a search. Check the box near the title of the article(s) you wish to add
  4. In the tools sidebar, click Export 
  5. Export Manager box opens, Select Direct Export in RIS format
  6. If file saves to browser, click on file
  7. Select EndNote desktop from the Choose Destination box
  8. Click the Save button
  9. Reference will show in Imported references folder and Recently added folder plus [Unfiled]
  10. Add reference to subject group

Google Scholar

  1. Open EndNote 21 desktop app
  2. From the library homepage, click Google Scholar
  3. Perform a search
  4. Under the article title, locate and click the quotation icon
  5. If you click on EndNote, the reference will direct export to EndNote 21 only
  6. If you click RefMan, the Choose Destination box appears, select EndNote or EndNote online
  7. Reference will show in Imported references folder and [Unfiled]

Manually Create References

  1. Open EndNote 21 desktop app
  2. From Menu select References, New Reference
  3. Select the Reference Type
  4. Fill in the appropriate fields
    • Author field  (Smith, John Allen or Smith, J.A. is the proper format for names)
    • Title field
    • Year field
    • Publisher field (if required by the style and reference type)
    • URL field if applicable
    • Access date field
    • Save reference to appropriate folder

If you need to add a webpage or a book or book chapter, it is recommended you manually type the information
