About Groups and Organizing References

EndNote 21 uses groups to organize references by project, subject, etc. A new library begins with a single editable group set titled My Groups. You can create up to 5,000 group sets in your EndNote library

Groups is the best way to keep track of different projects you are working on as you can only sync and share one library

[Unfiled] is the default location for references not placed in a specific group

Create Groups

1. From the top menu select Groups
2. Select Create Group
3. New shows up under Group Set, My Groups
4. Name Group

Rename a Group

1. Select the group in the groups panel
2. Right click on the group name
3. Type in a new name for the group
4. Click anywhere outside the new group box to close it

Group Sets

Group sets can contain any combination of custom groups, smart groups, and combination groups.

Some Groups are created temporarily and will not appear when you reopen the library.

• Imported References
• Duplicate References
• Copied References

Some groups are default with the program. You cannot rename these groups.

• Search Results
• Unfiled
• Trash
• Find Full Text
